This course is designed to teach dental professionals about the various topics related to dental radiography safety, including hazard identification and precautions, safety guidelines for x-ray tube safety, scattered radiation, techniques for reducing radiation exposure, contingency plans, and staff responsibilities for radiation safety compliance. The course also covers safety guidelines for intra-oral and hand-held x-ray equipment, including registration requirements and safety checks, as well as safety guidelines for cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in dental radiography, such as positioning, shielding, and additional protective equipment. Additionally, the course provides an overview of the roles and responsibilities of employees, Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPS), Radiation Protection Advisers (RPA), and Duty Holders under IR(ME)R17, as well as the legal and registration requirements for staff involved with exposure to ionising radiation. Finally, the course covers the importance of Medical Physics Experts (MPEs) in dental practice and their responsibilities, dose limits for staff and other persons, and reporting requirements for accidental and unintended exposures of patients and staff. Upon completion of this course, dental professionals will have the knowledge and skills to implement safety measures in dental radiography, minimise risks, and comply with radiation safety regulations.
